Boat Race

Last Sunday was the famous "Boat Race" down the Thames River. One of Renae's friends mentioned it a week before, so we decided to check it out. It starts down in Putney and ends in Hammersmith (or something like that), and I had even seen it advertised on TV. Sounded like it was a big event not to be missed, so we decided that we would meet in Putney on the riverside to watch the race. I was expecting it to be some big, highly-competitive race down the Thames, involving lots of different teams from all over the country. Boy was I wrong...

Turns out there is only 2 teams, Oxford and Cambridge, and therefore, only 2 boats. I could not for the life of me figure out why it was such a massive event, until I went down and witnessed the mayhem first hand. And then joined in. It was just like any other University event - lots and lots of drunken lads, tarty girls, empty cans all over the street, etc, etc. What made this even funnier was the all the students. Most of them were stumbling around in their University blazers, trendy sunglasses and smart knitted jumpers, totally off their faces. The actual race only goes for about 15 minutes, then the rest of the time is spent getting twatted.

We didn't even see the race in the end - we left the pub too late. Still, it didn't stop us from getting absolutely plastered with everyone else. One of the guys we were with was about to inherit £9.3million, so he was in a jolly mood, buying countless bottles of champagne. I think we got through about 5 bottles between the 4 of us in the end. Needless to say that Monday at work was quite a struggle...

Read all about the silly race here. I shall post some pics once I manage to extract them from Renae.
